Abstract
The basis of this study is grounded in the geometric ornaments located in the inner courtyard of the Şehzade Mosque, a significant example of Ottoman architecture, and aims to transfer these cultural elements into a contemporary design approach. For this purpose, graphic-based pattern designs were produced, and three-dimensional programs were used to simulate the surface work in a more realistic way. Thus, it is aimed to create new surface designs that bring together the cultural values of the past with today’s design understanding by using technological design tools. The method followed in this research builds on the geometric patterns historically used as decorative elements in Ottoman architecture, which are among the most distinctive aesthetic components of Islamic art. However, the adaptation of these motifs to contemporary design and their use in digital surface design have been addressed only to a limited extent in the literature. Therefore, studies that integrate the aesthetic elements of Islamic art with modern design concepts are needed. In this study, the patterns were graphically reproduced in Adobe Illustrator; supported with AI-based visual generation tools; and converted into materials by creating texture maps through Adobe Substance 3D Sampler. In the final stage, the produced materials were applied to both fabric surfaces and ready-to-wear garments in CLO3D, resulting in three-dimensional visualizations. This process demonstrates how 2D graphic works can be realistically applied within a 3D design environment.
