Abstract

Fire is a natural disaster that occurs as a result of the combination of heat and oxygen with flammable materials and can cause serious loss of life, material damage and environmental destruction. Fire safety is the set of measures taken to ensure that individuals and society are prepared for fire hazards and to minimize possible damages. The main purpose of this study is to measure the levels of fire safety and awareness among Sakarya University students. Within the scope of the research, data were collected from a total of 594 participants through a questionnaire and these data were analyzed using SPSS 23 and SmartPLS software. It shows that most of the participants have a moderate level of knowledge of fire knowledge and their participation rates in applied studies such as practical fire extinguishing training are quite low. It was also concluded that about 48% of respondents did not have an escape plan in the event of a fire. According to the results of structural equation modeling, it was determined that the level of fire safety knowledge and awareness had a significant and positive effect on fire hazard and its consequences. As a result of the study, it emphasizes the importance of practical training as well as theoretical knowledge to increase fire safety awareness. According to the results of the research, it is necessary to expand the scope of training programs to increase fire safety awareness, especially among young individuals. Increasing the frequency of fire safety trainings and drills organized in universities will contribute to the development of fire safety awareness. In this context, it is recommended to re-evaluate the content and process of fire safety trainings, to carry them out regularly in certain periods, and also to increase the integration of theoretical training and practical applications.
