Abstract

The concept of green finance gained prominence after the 2010 UN Climate Change Conference with the establishment of the Green Climate Fund, created to provide financial support for emission reduction and climate adaptation in developing countries. This study examines the structural similarities and differences between green finance and traditional finance, and discusses whether green finance—defined as the reshaping of traditional financial instruments and institutions in line with sustainability principles—represents merely a sustainable evolution of traditional finance or a new ethical paradigm. Two main perspectives dominate the literature. The first argues that green finance is a gradual adaptation of traditional finance to support sustainability goals. The second interprets green finance as a significant paradigm shift, suggesting a reform of capitalism based on ethical principles. While environmental responsibility and ethical values are increasingly emphasized, financial return still remains at the core of the system. A genuine ethical paradigm shift, however, would require further measures such as mandatory ESG reporting, transparent environmental auditing mechanisms, and the integration of environmental performance scores into credit evaluations. Therefore, it can be argued that green finance currently exhibits a hybrid structure. Methodologically, this study is based on a theoretical approach and literature analysis, focusing on the structural features of green finance and its potential for value-driven transformation. In addition to the conceptual discussion, it proposes an ESG metrics framework for the logistics sector. This framework operationalizes the paradigm debate by providing measurable indicators to assess whether green finance practices in carbon-intensive industries reflect a mere financial evolution or a broader ethical transformation. In conclusion, this study argues that green finance should be evaluated both as an instrumental transformation (a sustainable version of the traditional financial system) and as a value-driven paradigm. The success of transitioning toward the paradigm dimension depends on binding policies, transparent reporting mechanisms, and the implementation of measurable metrics. By proposing a sector-specific and applicable framework, the study also addresses an important gap in the literature.
