Abstract
This study analyzes the use of ethnosports, which have started to revive in the Turkish World today, in Kyrgyz Cinema. Cinematography plays an important role in the transformation of culture, including types of ethnosports, for future generations. In the framework of this study, 18 Kyrgyz films containing types of ethnosports were selected using a purposive sampling method. The ethnosports used in the films were determined using Categorical Method, and the percentages of the duration of the ethnosport scenes according to the duration of the film were calculated using the Frequency Method of Content Analysis. In addition, in order to study the contribution of ethnosports to the dramaturgy of the film, the functions of ethnosports in film storytelling were determined. The analysis of Kyrgyz films revealed that 13 types of ethnosports, which can be grouped as games with horses, types of archery, varieties of wrestling and intellectual games, were used in 13 films of the Soviet period and 5 films of the Independence period. The result of the analysis shows that the level of use of ethnosport in Kyrgyz cinema is very low; more precisely, except for the film “Kök Börü: Game of the Tough”, there are no films in which the main theme is the type of ethnosport. In other films, ethnosports are used only in some scenes, either complementing the plot of the film or developing and presenting the film character.
