Abstract

Research Article The study was based on the premise that even if a natural textile material is inherently ecological, it may not be sustainable due to the non-ecological processes it undergoes during production. The suitability for sustainability and the sustainability capacity of natural textile materials, namely wool, cotton, linen and hemp—were investigated. To determine the technical properties of these materials and the conditions under which their use could contribute to sustainability, literature and databases concerning the use of natural ecological materials in the textile and ready-to-wear sectors, as well as the sustainability of these materials, were reviewed, and the findings were evaluated using bibliometric analysis techniques. The trends and priorities surrounding natural fibres in the context of sustainability were identified, along with appropriate sustainability approaches in textiles and successful applications that achieve sustainability. This study has demonstrated that sustainable textiles should be approached not on a fibre-based basis, but with a life cycle and context-focused understanding. It demonstrates that sustainability in textiles depends more on the nature of production and consumption systems than on the raw material itself. It was concluded that the technical properties of ecological textile materials conducive to sustainability must be reinforced with sustainable production methods and techniques, and ethical, ecological, political and psychological measures addressing the environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainability were proposed.
