Abstract

This study investigates how individuals verify news content encountered on social media, focusing on their strategies for assessing information credibility. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically. The results indicate that participants primarily rely on self-devised, informal verification strategies rather than institutionalized or systematic fact-checking approaches. Awareness of professional fact-checking entities and advanced verification tools, such as reverse image searches, was generally low. The most frequently reported practices included cross-referencing across multiple news platforms, consulting official institutional sources, and seeking validation from trusted personal contacts. Perceived personal relevance emerged as a critical motivator: participants were more inclined to verify news they considered directly impactful to their lives or those of close social circles. Some participants viewed verification efforts as ineffective, often maintaining pre-existing beliefs despite contradictory evidence-a tendency consistent with cognitive dissonance theory. This suggests a psychological motivation to reduce discomfort by accepting information aligned with prior attitudes. Overall, the findings reveal that news verification behavior is driven less by formal media literacy and more by subjective, situational factors. These insights call for a reevaluation of existing media literacy frameworks and intervention strategies to better address the nuances of misinformation in digital contexts.
