Abstract

This study aims to demonstrate that language is not merely a tool of communication but also a cognitive and epistemological system that constructs thought, culture, and social reality, by examining the conceptual world of Turkish within the framework of the Sapir–Whorf Hypothesis (SWH). The primary corpus of the research consists of Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk, written in the 11th century by Mahmud al-Kashgari, which is recognized as the earliest known dictionary of the Turkish language. The study is designed in accordance with the qualitative research paradigm; document analysis is employed for data collection, and content analysis techniques are utilized for data analysis. In this context, the social concepts presented in the work are examined under four main categories—family, kinship, education, and social structure/status—and are evaluated from the perspective of the language–thought relationship as proposed by the Sapir–Whorf Hypothesis. The findings reveal that the concepts found in Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk are not merely linguistic signs; rather, they function as cognitive-conceptual structures that construct and reproduce the mental universe, value system, and modes of social organization of Turkish society. When assessed within the framework of the Sapir–Whorf Hypothesis, these findings confirm that language is not a passive medium reflecting reality; on the contrary, it is a constitutive system that conceptualizes, categorizes, and assigns meaning to reality. In this regard, Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk can be regarded not only as a historical lexicographical text but also as an epistemological and ontological text that constructs the patterns of thought, the world of values, and the cultural codes of Turkish society. In conclusion, this study contributes to the literature both theoretically and methodologically by addressing the relationship between language, thought, and culture through one of the foundational texts of Turkish. It further reveals the determining role of the conceptual richness of Turkish in shaping social consciousness, cultural continuity, and mental structures.
