Abstract
The Kurdish language and identity have been subjected to numerous forms of oppression in Syria, Iran, and Turkey for many years. Kurdish was banned, Kurdish press and publishing activities were not permitted, Kurdish education was virtually nonexistent, and constitutionally, Kurds were considered Turks. Faced with these pressures, many Kurdish writers were forced to seek asylum in Europe, and the Kurdish intelligentsia conducted press and publishing activities in the diaspora, thus shaping a Kurdish diaspora novel. This study will examine the reflections of the oppression on the Kurdish language and identity in the Kurdish novel. The Kurdish diaspora novel consists of writers who left their country and established a literary school in Europe. Mahmut Baksi, Mehmed Uzun, Fırat Cewerî, Jan Dost, and Helîm Yûsiv have attempted to reflect the oppression on the Kurdish language and identity to the extent permitted by their novelistic narratives. Kurdish diaspora novelists, through their novels, have challenged the denial of Kurdish identity and language, and have sought to demonstrate the existence of the Kurdish language and identity, and the right of Kurds to speak their language and live with their Kurdish identity. By transferring the negative effects of dominant cultures into the collective memory of their characters, the narrative structures of novels set in different places and times have become a gallery of socio-political reality.
