Abstract
Postmodernism is a problematizing system of thought that emerged in response to the ontological and sociocultural crises of the twentieth century, challenging modernity’s positivist, rationality-based progressive worldview and its claims to universal truth. Carrying connotations of a rupture as implied by meanings such as “post-modern” or “beyond the modern,” postmodernism paradoxically owes its existence to modernism, with which it maintains a dialectical relationship. However, this relationship extends beyond mere chronological succession; rather, it represents an anti-modernist stance toward modernity’s excessively rationalized, emotionally detached, and disciplinary structure. In particular, the traumatic memory engendered by the Second World War, the technological devastation of the atomic bomb, and intensifying ecological crises undermined modernity’s promises of an “ideal world.” In the artistic sphere, this transformation became tangible from the 1960s onward through the dissolution of traditional aesthetic canons. Values emphasized by modernism such as “singularity,” “originality,” and “purity” were replaced in the postmodern process by structures characterized by reproduction and intertextual interaction. This study aims to examine two of the fundamental practices of this transformation irony and eclecticism through selected examples, adopting an analytical perspective grounded in qualitative research.
