Abstract
This study examines how inflation adjustment is reflected in the reported financial position of seven food retail companies listed on Borsa Istanbul by comparing ratios calculated from their financial statements for the 2022 reporting period prepared without applying IAS 29 and those restated for inflation under IAS 29. A comparative ratio analysis approach was employed. Accordingly, a total of seventeen financial ratios were evaluated under four categories: liquidity, activity, financial structure, and profitability. Ratios for 2023 and 2024 were also included to describe the companies’ financial position in the subsequent reporting periods. The findings indicate that the application of IAS 29 did not change the ratios of all companies in the same direction or to the same extent. While the current ratio increased in most companies, changes in the quick and cash ratios remained more limited. Inventory and accounts payable turnover increased in all companies, whereas the other activity ratios varied according to their sales, asset, and financing structures. Regarding financial structure, the leverage ratio generally decreased, while changes in the equity-to-total-assets ratio differed across companies. In terms of profitability, the gross profit margin decreased in all companies, whereas return on equity declined in most of them. The findings indicate that inflation adjustment affects the financial statement items constituting the numerators and denominators of the ratios to different extents. Therefore, changes in these ratios should not be interpreted as corresponding improvements or deteriorations in the companies’ underlying economic activities. By comparing two different reporting bases for the same period across four ratio categories, this study contributes comparative findings to the literature.
