Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the musical characteristics of children’s songs available on digital platforms and to identify the musical tendencies that shape the production of such content. Within the scope of the research, the YouTubeplatform was used as the primary data source; the first 25 songs ranked by view count were selected as the sample based on a search conducted with the keyword “children’s songs.” The study adopts a qualitative research design employing a descriptive analysis approach. The selected songs were analyzed in terms of tonality/mode, tempo, melodic structure, rhythmic structure, and form. Throughout the research process, lyrical content and visual elements were excluded from the scope, and the analysis focused solely on musical features. The findings indicate that the majority of the analyzed children’s songs are composed in a major tonality, although minor tonalities are also present to a certain extent. Tempo values were found to be predominantly concentrated within a moderate range (90–120 BPM), suggesting that these tempos support children’s rhythmic perception and facilitate active participation. In terms of melodic structure, most songs were composed within narrow to medium pitch ranges, while the use of wide pitch ranges was notably limited. This finding demonstrates a preference for melodies that are suitable for children’s vocal capacities and are easy to perform. Regarding rhythmic structure, all songs exhibit simple, regular, and repetitive patterns. In terms of form, the A-B structure was found to be predominant. These results indicate that repetition and simplicity are central principles in the construction of children’s songs. Additionally, although the duration of most songs is relatively short, some content is extended through repetition and variation. This can be interpreted as a reflection of the viewership-oriented dynamics of digital platforms. In conclusion, children’s songs on digital platforms are characterized by musical simplicity, repetition, accessibility, and suitability for child development. However, these songs are shaped not only by pedagogical considerations but also by the attention economy and viewership dynamics inherent in digital media environments. Accordingly, the study highlights the necessity of evaluating both educational and digital platform influences in the production of music for children.
