In light of the findings, it was concluded that the sociological developments that created the conditions for the emergence of arabesque music began with rural-to-urban migration movements in the 1950s; that this process was driven by the deprivation experienced in villages as a result of agricultural mechanization; that arabesque culture emerged as a hybrid form of rural and urban cultures under the influence of the proliferation of informal settlements (gecekondus) created by rural-to-urban migrants to meet their housing needs in cities; that arabesque music culture became widespread through the influence of the spatial atmosphere created in cities by spaces associated with village culture; and that, with the changing perspective of Turkish politics in the 1980s, arabesque music culture was supported, enabling it to grow and become more widespread.

Abstract

Migration movements that began in Türkiye in the 1950s constitute a fundamental factor underlying many sociological phenomena. One important cultural domain affected by these mass movements, which began in the 1950s and gradually accelerated in the following years, is music. This study examined rural-to-urban migration and its effects on music culture through the example of arabesque music. In this context, the study was structured within a qualitative research approach based on document analysis. The research data consisted of academic books, book chapters, and scientific articles on the subject, and the data obtained were descriptively evaluated in accordance with the aim and research problems of the study.
