Abstract
Considering that Sufism is an individual and subjective discipline, the importance of person-centered studies becomes more apparent. Especially during the formative period of Sufism, certain understandings of Sufism developed within specific milieus and around particular concepts. From this perspective, one of the centers that requires independent research and discourse concerning the formative period of Sufism is Nishapur. This milieu is often associated with malâmat and futuwwa and produced prominent Sufis whose names and influence have endured to the present. One such Sufi is Abû al-Qâsim al-Nasrâbâdî. References to him can be found both in Sufi literature and in works of history, genealogy, and geography. Nasrâbâdî is mentioned among the third generation of the Malâmatî school. Moreover, he was engaged in various sciences such as hadîth, sîra, and history, and trained students who later produced works in hadîth. Having undertaken numerous scholarly journeys, Nasrâbâdî visited the leading intellectual centers of his time and met with distinguished scholars. Spiritually, he synthesized both the Nishapur and Baghdad traditions of Sufism. His spiritual master in Sufism was Abû Bakr al-Shiblî. At the same time, he was influenced by al-Hallâj al-Mansûr; as a result of this influence, Nasrâbâdî was misunderstood by the public, beaten, imprisoned, and eventually forced to leave his city. Among his spiritual mentors were prominent figures of the Junaydiyya school. Furthermore, as a figure who served as a bridge between the formation and the codification of Sufism, Nasrâbâdî trained several important disciples. Among his students were al-Sulamî and Abû ʿAlî al-Daqqâq. An examination of al-Sulamî’s works reveals the direct influence of Nasrâbâdî’s identity as a historian, traditionist, and exegete. Through Daqqâq, Nasrâbâdî also indirectly influenced al-Qushayrî. The numerous citations from Nasrâbâdî found in the works of authors from the Khurâsân region who wrote on Sufism indicate his great significance within that milieu. An analysis of the mystical concepts he defined shows that ahwâl were predominant in his thought. His particular appreciation for samâʿ demonstrates that he did not embody a typical Malâmatî tendency but was instead influenced by his master Shiblî and the Baghdad Sufi tradition. The foundations of Nasrâbâdî’s Sufi thought rest upon the Qurʾân and the Sunna. At the same time, the mystical character of his native city is reflected in his definition of Sufism. In this respect, his understanding of Sufism simultaneously implies a definition of futuwwa. Consequently, Nasrâbâdî’s thought does not exhibit a strict distinction between Sufism and futuwwa; rather, he gives the impression that the two concepts can be used interchangeably. In Nasrâbâdî’s conception of Sufism, jadhba and shaṭḥiyya occupy a central position. According to him, jadhba serves as a means for the Sufi’s spiritual advancement. His shathiyyât were given special attention appearing under a separate heading in Bâqlî’s Sharḥ al-Shathiyyât and in the section devoted to him in ʿAttâr’s Tadhkirat al-Awliyâʾ. He offered distinctive explanations concerning mystical states such as concealment and sitr–tajallî, sobriety and intoxication sahw–sukr, jamʿ–tafriqa, mahw–ithbât. Likewise, his definitions regarding spiritual stations such as piety taqwâ, zuhd, shukr, dhikr, ʿibâda, khawf–rajâʾ, firâsa, shawq, tawakkul, ridâ, mahabba, maʿrifa found place in later works. In this way, Nasrâbâdî contributed indirectly to the transformation of Sufism into a written and systematic science.
Bunun yanında onun şathiyeleri Baklî’nin Şerh-i Şathiyyat’ında müstakil bir başlıkla, Attâr’ın Tezkiretü’l-Evliyâ’sında onun hayatının anlatıldığı bölümde ele alınmıştır. Onun setr-tecellî, sahv-sekr, cem’-tefrika, mahv-isbat gibi hâllerle ilgili tanımlamaları bulunmaktadır. Bununla birlikte onun takvâ, zühd, şükür, zikir, ibadet, havf-recâ, firâset, şevk, tevekkül, rızâ, muhabbet, mârifet gibi makamlarla alakalı tanımlamalarının eserlerde yer alması bu yönüyle tasavvufun kitâbî bir ilim haline gelmesine dolaylı olarak katkıda bulunmuştur.
