Abstract

This study aims to re-evaluate the established consensus in traditional literary criticism that widely categorizes Ottoman-era Arabic literature as a period of “decline” and “stagnation”. This critical approach has not only marginalized the aesthetic and intellectual production of this era but also caused a significant portion of its rich literary heritage to remain outside the scope of academic inquiry. Proceeding from this problematic framework, the article focuses on the prophetic encomium (al-madīḥ al-nabawī)—a poetic genre that acquired distinct visibility and functionality during the Ottoman period—and aims to delineate the fundamental axes determining the artistic and structural composition of this poetic tradition. The selection of Muḥammad Bahāʾ al-Dīn al-Rawwās as an exemplary figure for this research is justified not only by his voluminous poetic corpus of over ten thousand couplets, but also by the fact that his poems, which possess high aesthetic value, have not received the attention they deserve in both classical and modern scholarship. In this respect, the study seeks, on the one hand, to re-evaluate Ottoman-era Arabic literature beyond stereotypical generalizations and, on the other, to bring a relatively overshadowed poet into the limelight by highlighting his unique position within the tradition of prophetic praise. The article first provides a theoretical introduction that addresses the conceptual framework of prophetic praise in its lexical and terminological dimensions, followed by an examination of al-Rawwās’s life, scholarly journey, and Sufi experience. Born in Iraq in 1805, the poet’s educational formation—shaped across Iraq, the Hijaz, and Egypt, including his prolonged studies at al-Azhar—and his subsequent travels extending to the Mashriq, Anatolia, India, and other regions, are evaluated as the principal factors elucidating the multilayered structure of his poetic universe. The study demonstrates that al-Rawwās, who died in Iraq in 1870, authored numerous works in both prose and verse, and that his extant dīwāns are sufficiently representative of the structural characteristics of his prophetic encomia. Thus, the biographical framework is not confined to merely providing historical background; rather, it functions as an interpretive foundation that enables a deeper understanding of the poet’s aesthetic orientations and poetic imagination. In the analytical section, the research examines the prophetic encomia found across all of al-Rawwās’s extant dīwāns, thereby presenting a comprehensive evaluation that does not confine its findings to a single collection. Accordingly, the internal structure of these poems is organized around three primary levels: Introductory Axes: Within this level, particular prominence is accorded to the “prophetic nasīb” defined as a lyrical prelude based on love, ecstasy, and symbolic expression. Alongside this, the yearning for the sacred lands, specifically the Hijaz and Medina, also emerges as a significant introductory axis. Central Axis: This consists of pure praise directed explicitly at the persona of the Prophet; in this context, discourses of moral sublimity, outstanding virtues, heroism, profound reverence, and devotion are brought to the forefront. Special Axes: Here, the Sufi sensibility that permeates al-Rawwās’s poetry plays a decisive role, highlighting themes such as the Muḥammadan Light (al-Nūr al-Muḥammadī), the primacy of his creation, and the belief that the universe was created for the sake of the Prophet. Furthermore, the intensive employment of rhetorical devices such as metaphor (istiʿāra), simile (tashbīh), paronomasia (jinās), and antithesis (ṭibāq) elevates these poems beyond mere eulogistic texts, transforming them into conduits of a multilayered aesthetic and spiritual experience. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that Ottoman-era Arabic poetry exhibited robust continuity, depth, and productivity, particularly in the realm of prophetic encomia, and establishes al-Rawwās as one of the distinguished representatives of this vibrant literary heritage.
