Abstract

Identity and resistance are among the most important areas of debate in contemporary visual culture. Although street art and graphic design have different production practices, they share the function of making political discourses, collective identities, and counter-hegemonic narratives visible through visual language. The main aim of this article is to examine in depth the aesthetic and political intersections between street art and graphic design, revealing how these two disciplines have developed a common visual language in the construction of identity, the formation of collective memory, and practices of resistance. While street art challenges the spatial hegemony of power through spontaneous, anonymous, and often illegal interventions in urban spaces, graphic design disseminates messages to a mass audience through posters, digital visuals, social media campaigns, and other communication tools using a more systematic, planned, and institutional aesthetic approach. To examine this relationship, the article follows a historical chronology, analyzing graffiti's evolution from its ancient roots to modern vandalism and its integration with graphic design elements. Specifically, it discusses how street art draws on graphic design's dynamic typography, symbolic expressions, use of color, and communicative power by evaluating the works of pioneering street artists (such as Banksy, Shepard Fairey, and Keith Haring) from a graphic design perspective. The findings reveal how street art and graphic design intersect in the context of identity and resistance: While street art is spontaneous and graphic design is systematic in their aesthetic strategies, both convey messages quickly through symbols; in identity construction, street art makes marginalized identities visible, while graphic design carries them into global circulation; in political resistance, street art intervenes in space, while graphic design spreads across global networks in the digital realm. These examples (the 1968 Paris graphic posters, Gezi stencils, and Black Lives Matter murals) demonstrate the transformative power of visual language in identity and resistance practices; beyond aesthetics, street art and graphic design are powerful tools that carry the memory of social struggles, reproduce identities, and make political resistance visible. Ultimately, examining interdisciplinary intersections is critical to understanding the political dimensions of contemporary visual culture.

Kuramsal çerçeve, Stuart Hall'un kimlik teorisi, Henri Lefebvre'in mekân üretimi yaklaşımı ve Jacques Rancière'in politik estetik kavramları üzerine oturmaktadır. Bulgular, sokak sanatı ile grafik tasarımın kimlik ve direniş bağlamında nasıl kesiştiğini ortaya koymaktadır: Estetik stratejilerde sokak sanatı spontan, grafik tasarım sistematik olsa da ikisi de sembollerle hızlı mesaj iletir; kimlik inşasında sokak sanatı marjinal kimlikleri görünür kılar, grafik tasarım bunları küresel dolaşıma taşır; politik direnişte sokak sanatı mekâna müdahale eder, grafik tasarım dijital alanda küresel ağlara yayılır. Bu örnekler (1968 Paris grafik afişleri, Gezi stencil'leri ve Black Lives Matter mural'ları), görsel dilin kimlik ve direniş pratiklerindeki dönüştürücü gücünü göstermekte; sokak sanatı ve grafik tasarım, estetikten öte, toplumsal mücadelelerin belleğini taşıyan, kimlikleri yeniden üreten ve politik direnişi görünür kılan güçlü araçlardır. Sonuç olarak, disiplinler arası kesişimleri incelemek, günümüz görsel kültürünün politik boyutlarını anlamada kritik önem taşır.
