Abstract

Fiscal pressures such as global economic crises, increasing public debt, population aging, and climate change have made the concept of fiscal sustainability one of the key research areas in public finance literature. This study aims to examine academic studies published in the field of fiscal sustainability using bibliometric methods. Using publications obtained from the Web of Science database, the development process of the field, publication trends, most prolific authors, institutions, countries, journals, and keyword networks are analyzed. Based on the analysis results, it can be stated that the most influential author in this field is Antonio Afonso, the journal with the most publications is Sustainability, the country with the highest output is the United States, and the institution with the most publications is the IMF. Furthermore, the findings indicate that fiscal sustainability research emerged after the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, increased significantly, especially after 2012, and that the current literature revolves around the concepts of public debt, fiscal discipline, fiscal rules, budget balance, and sustainable development. In light of this information, it is believed that this study will guide future research by revealing the development trends in the field.
