Abstract

Objective Bruxism is a complex parafunctional habit characterized by involuntary masticatory muscle activity, observed in both childhood and adulthood. It is classified into two subtypes: sleep bruxism and awake bruxism, and manifests through teeth clenching, grinding, or thrusting movements of the mandible. Numerous factors such as psychosocial stress, genetic predisposition, neurological disorders, systemic diseases, and medication use play roles in its etiology. The diagnostic process is supported by clinical observation, questionnaires, electromyography (EMG), and polysomnography (PSG). Treatment of bruxism involves individualized approaches, including occlusal splints, relaxation exercises, laser applications, behavioral therapies, and physical modalities. This review aims to address pediatric bruxism from a multidisciplinary perspective, focusing on its etiology, diagnosis, and current treatment approaches. Conclusion Bruxism is a disorder with a multifactorial etiology that requires a multidisciplinary approach for diagnosis and treatment. In children, psychosocial status, systemic conditions, and sleep patterns should be carefully assessed. Diagnosis should be based on clinical findings and parental observation, while treatment should be individualized and focus on symptom management. Therapeutic approaches such as splints, relaxation exercises, laser applications, and behavioral therapies may be effective. However, further controlled studies are needed to standardize treatment protocols.
