Abstract

This study is a qualitative research that examines music theory education, which constitutes a fundamental component of solfege courses in conservatories, and the assessment and evaluation processes in this field. While emphasizing the importance of theoretical competence in ear training, dictation, and sight-reading practices, the study focuses on how topics such as basic music notation, intervals, tonality, modality, maqam knowledge, and chords are addressed in examinations. Within the scope of the research, structured interviews were conducted with 36 solfege educators working at 21 state conservatories, and examination questions obtained from 10 conservatories—five offering secondary-level education and five offering undergraduate education—were subjected to content analysis. By systematically classifying secondary-level and undergraduate examination samples according to topic headings, this study aims to describe educators’ questioning strategies and to provide a comprehensive resource for theory-oriented academic studies. The data obtained offer important insights into improving the quality and permanence of music theory education in conservatories.

Araştırma kapsamında, 21 devlet konservatuvarında görev yapan 36 solfej eğitimcisiyle yapılandırılmış görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiş ve 10 konservatuvardan (5’i ortaokul, 5’i lisans eğitimi veren konservatuvarlar) elde edilen sınav soruları içerik analizine tabi tutulmuştur.
