Abstract

This study examines school counselors’ interaction styles and professional roles in educational settings through the lens of Symbolic Interactionism. According to the theory, individuals continuously reproduce and redefine their roles through everyday social interactions. Within this framework, the study argues that school counselors shape their responsibilities not only through formal job descriptions but also through the symbolic meanings generated in their daily interactions. Educational institutions are approached as social environments in which interpersonal symbols are densely produced; thus, the relationships counselors develop with students, teachers, and administrators provide insight into how their professional roles and status are interpreted. The research employed a qualitative methodology grounded in a phenomenological design. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 psychological counselors working in public schools. Counselors’ interaction experiences, perceptions of their roles, and the influence of these processes on their professional identities were analyzed. Content analysis revealed that counselors’ roles were largely shaped by the expectations of school administrators and teachers, suggesting that functional demands often overshadow their specialized professional identity. Conversely, some counselors who established strong, meaningful relationships with students emerged as significant symbolic figures within the school culture. Overall, the findings indicate that counselors’ roles are dynamically reproduced in accordance with the school’s social structure and administrative practices.
