Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the perceptions of local residents living in the Mudurnu district, which holds the Cittaslow (Slow City) designation, regarding the economic, social, cultural, and environmental impacts of tourism, as well as their level of support for tourism development. The study also investigates whether residents’ perceptions and support differ significantly according to demographic characteristics. Designed as a quantitative study, data were collected through a survey administered to 393 local residents of Mudurnu. Residents’ perceptions of tourism impacts were measured using the Perceived Tourism Impacts Scale. Data analysis included reliability and factor analyses, as well as non-parametric tests, namely the Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal–Wallis H tests. The findings indicate that local residents generally perceive the economic and cultural impacts of tourism positively, while demonstrating a more cautious attitude toward its social and environmental impacts. In addition, the overall level of support for tourism development among local residents was found to be high. Analyses based on demographic variables revealed that residents’ perceptions of tourism impacts differ significantly according to age, education level, employment status, and length of residence in the destination. The results underscore the importance of incorporating local residents’ perceptions and expectations into tourism planning and management processes in order to ensure the sustainability of tourism development in Cittaslow destinations
