Abstract
The rapid increase in e-commerce volume in Türkiye over the last decade has led to a significant expansion of employment in the postal and courier services sector, making motorcycle couriers a visible part of urban life. However, the work schedule behind fast delivery services, the intense time pressure, and traffic risks bring serious occupational health and safety problems for couriers. For this reason, the transportation sector ranks second after the construction sector in terms of fatal work accidents. In 2015, the number of workplaces operating in the postal and courier sector more than tripled to 9,293 by 2024; during the same period, the number of employees in the sector also increased 2.35 times to 81,271. This rapid growth in the sector is also reflected in the work accident data, with a total of 30,230 work accidents occurring during this period. According to 2024 Social Security Institution (SGK) records, 1,843 employees lost their lives as a result of work-related accidents across Turkey, while the Courier Rights Association reported that 63 of these deaths were among motorcycle couriers alone. This situation demonstrates that the risks to occupational health and safety in this sector have reached a significant level. The aim of this study is to analyze work-related accidents that occurred within the scope of postal and courier activities between 2015 and 2024, to identify potential risks that may be encountered in the sector, to contribute to the development of preventive measures to increase employee safety, and to offer suggestions for strengthening occupational health and safety policies in this rapidly growing field.
