Abstract

This study examines the touristification of sacred places in Turkey, with a particular focus on tombs and mausoleums. It discusses how these places acquire not only religious meaning but also touristic visibility through patterns of visitation, accessibility, and spatial transformation. The study draws on the literature on religion, sacred space, and religious tourism, and supports its discussion with a qualitative reading of satellite and aerial imagery from selected tomb environments. Rather than claiming a statistical measurement of visitor flows, the article offers a typological interpretation of spatial change and classifies tomb environments into three stages: isolated sacred sites, developing visit areas, and highly urbanized touristic destinations. The findings suggest that the changing spatial setting of tombs is shaped by belief practices, narratives of sanctity, transport connections, and surrounding service infrastructure. In this way, the article evaluates the relationship between religion, visitation, and space and proposes an interpretive framework for understanding the changing role of sacred landscapes in Turkey.
