Abstract

This study examines the development of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies in the vocational and technical education (VTE) literature during the period 1966–2025 using bibliometric analysis. 193 articles scanned in the SCOPUS database and meeting the criteria were analyzed using performance analysis (publication trend, journal productivity, country distribution) and science mapping techniques (co-authorship, country collaboration network, keyword co-occurrence, thematic evolution, strategic diagram). The findings show that the field accelerated after 2019 and grew rapidly from 2020 onwards. Publications were not concentrated in a narrow core journal, exhibiting an interdisciplinary and multi-centered structure. Co-authorship and country collaboration networks revealed relatively distinct clusters; the USA stood out in country productivity, while Indonesia, China, and Malaysia were noteworthy. Thematic evolution analysis showed a shift in research focus from vocational rehabilitation to AR/VR integration, and then to immersive learning design and learning effectiveness. In the strategic diagram, augmented reality is positioned as the engine theme, while virtual reality and immersive learning are identified as core themes open to development. The literature points to a dynamic field that is evolving but not yet clustered.
