Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of the “2nd National Siirt Beekeeping and Bee Health Workshop,” organized in collaboration between Siirt University and Bitlis Eren University on November 12, 2025, and its contributions to the beekeeping sector. The workshop was conducted to discuss current challenges in beekeeping, share scientific and technological advancements, and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders. Participants included universities, public institutions, beekeeping associations, industry representatives, and researchers. In the opening sessions, it was highlighted that beekeeping in Siirt province has shown increases in hive numbers and honey production; however, deficiencies in storage, infrastructure, and organization limit sustainability. It was also noted that most producers benefit from grant supports, that Pervari honey should be promoted to its deserved value, and that tourism should be integrated with beekeeping. Scientific and technical sessions addressed specific topics such as the management of Varroa and Tropilaelaps pests, the use of formic acid and lithium, the utilization of pollen to reduce winter mortality, and queen bee management. Issues of counterfeit honey prevention, the effectiveness of geographical indications, and the updating of certification documents were also discussed. Additionally, recommendations were made regarding the quality of honey and bee products, branding criteria, the importance of technological adoption, and deficiencies in producers’ record-keeping. In conclusion, the workshop highlighted the current state of beekeeping at both regional and national levels and developed concrete recommendations for improving the quality and certification processes of local products. The outcomes serve as an important reference for increasing producer capacity, ensuring the sustainable development of the beekeeping sector, and enhancing Turkey’s competitiveness in global markets, particularly regarding strategic decisions and the effective management of bureaucratic processes by higher authorities.
