Abstract

Chronic and complex life-limiting health problems and special needs in children result in repeated hospital visits and hospitalizations, creating a need for consistent medical care and monitoring. Nowadays the role of home healthcare in treating children who need regular medical care has become significant. Pediatric home healthcare involves various medical and psychosocial interventions for children with severe functional limitations due to health conditions, conducted at home within the family environment. Children receiving these services have their medical care provided along with emotional and social needs met in their private settings. This practice adopts a interdisipliner treatment approach considering both medical treatments as well as psychological and social needs of patients. Social work, one of these disciplines, aims to provide psychosocial support to patients with a holistic service approach. This review study aims to explain the professional roles and responsibilities of social workers, who are an important component of home care for children, and to reveal the significance of social work in pediatric home healthcare. This study is a traditional (narrative) review that examines the relevant literature on the subject. The existing literature shows that social workers in pediatric home health services take on a wide range of responsibilities, from care coordination to psychosocial counseling, mediation, and rights-based advocacy.
