Abstract

The purpose of this review is to systematically examine academic studies on "technologies used in disasters" published in both Turkish and English in the context of Turkey between 2020 and 2025, to reveal the scope and trends in technology use in disaster management. The 77 studies were analyzed in terms of disaster types and technologies used (artificial intelligence, GIS (Geographic Information System), UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), robotic systems, social media, etc.). The findings indicate that technologies are used extensively, particularly in the response phase, with tools such as AI, GIS, and early warning systems being prominent in search and rescue, rapid damage assessment, mapping of disaster areas, and communication processes. The number of studies on natural disasters and general disaster management is higher than that on man-made or technological disasters, and 2024 stands out as the year of highest academic interest. However, some technologies still have limited application and low visibility. The findings reveal that the effective use of technologies in disaster management is critical to reducing loss of life and property, and that future research should focus on both widespread and innovative technologies.
