Abstract

The aim of this article is to examine adolescents’ attitudes and behaviors towards prayer and ritual worship during adolescence and to conduct a contextual analysis of the quantitative findings within a holistic framework that is grounded in developmental dynamics. The empirical component of the study is based on a quantitative field survey conducted in 2013 and 2014 with adolescents residing in the provinces of Bursa and Balıkesir. The research sample consists of 212 adolescents with diverse socio-demographic characteristics. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire which was developed by the researcher. The obtained data were analyzed through frequency and percentage distributions using the SPSS 26 statistical software package. In the interpretation phase, the quantitative findings were evaluated through contextual analysis by considering the psychological, sociological, and theological contexts of adolescence. The findings indicate that adolescents’ attitudes and behaviors that are related to prayer and ritual worship display descriptively differentiated patterns depending on the variables such as gender, age group, and perceived socio-economic status. Within this framework, the study reveals that: (i) prayer emerges as a more widespread, accessible, and potentially continuous religious practice than formal ritual worship; (ii) formal practices such as salat, fasting, and Qur’an recitation show more selective, irregular, and periodic patterns; (iii) this irregularity reflects developmental and contextual fluctuations as a characteristic of adolescence rather than a interruption or weakening of religious orientation; (iv) feelings of religious guilt and sinfulness that frequently accompany disruptions in ritual worship function as a regulatory mechanism that is indicating the persistence of a sense of religious responsibility; (v) repentance operates, together with this experience of guilt, as a restorative mechanism that enables adolescents to re-engage with the religious process without abandoning religion altogether; (vi) adolescents’ religious orientations are shaped more strongly by individual, emotional, and subjective meaning-making processes than by the continuity of institutional and formal ritual practices; (vii) prayer and ritual worship are experienced by adolescents not only as normative obligations but also as practices fulfilling functions of emotional regulation, responsibility balancing, and existential meaning-making; and (viii) adolescent religiosity exhibits a cyclical and functional structure that is composed of the stages which are “prayer-ritual worship-disruption-guilt-repentance-reorientation” rather than a model of linear continuity or abrupt rupture.
