Abstract
Plants have gained substantial attention in drug development because of their inclusion of bioactive compounds. The bioactive compounds found in plants are known as secondary metabolites, and they play a crucial role in the pharmaceutical industry. Many of the drugs in use today have been developed by drawing inspiration from biologically active natural compounds. Quantification of phenolics in the methanol extract of Melilotus albus flowers was determined by LC-MS/MS, and coumarin was found as the major compound. DPPH antioxidant activity was measured by sensory analysis, and M. albus flowers were found to have moderate antioxidant activity (40.57%). These flowers were also found to contain totoal phenolic of 129.22 mg GA/g of plant extract. Since M. albus flowers contain coumarin as the main product, related plant flowers may be the source of coumarin and an antioxidant agent.
