Abstract

Factitious disorder is characterized by the intentional production or feigning of physical or psychological symptoms with the objective of adopting the patient role. There are three subtypes of factitious disorder. The subtypes could be seen as prominent with physical symptoms, psychological symptoms or both combined. Commonly presented clini- cal problems include hallucinations, depression, suicidal ideation, dissociative symptoms, and amnesia. Factitious disorders can cause serious morbidity and mortality. In this report, we present an adolescent case diagnosed with factitious disorder who was admitted to a child and adolescent psychiatry unit with psychological symptoms and the process of differential diagnosis is discussed in the light of relevant literature. Key Words: Adolescence, psychological symptoms, factitious disorder.
