Abstract

Located on the western frontier of the Lycian Region, Letoon served both as the region’s principal religious center and as a sacred venue where major assemblies convened and collective decisions were made. In addition to public architecture, the sanctuary includes a necropolis extending along the sacred road connecting Xanthos to Letoon and continuing along the foot of the hill. This study focuses on a tomb monument with a hyposorion, which stands out within the necropolis due to its scale and architectural quality. Excavations conducted in 2021 and 2022 brought the monument to light; it remains the only tomb with a hyposorion identified in the Letoon necropolis to date. The monument’s architectural characteristics, together with the associated archaeological finds, allow for a contextual evaluation and partial dating. The evidence indicates that the tomb was first used in the Hellenistic Period and remained in use until the Late Roman Imperial Period. The results contribute to a clearer understanding of the character of the necropolis within the sanctuary and provide a basis for future research reassessing its relationship with the city of Xanthos.
