Abstract

Thalassemia is a group of autosomal recessive chronic diseases that occur as a result of damaged synthesis of one or more of the alpha, beta, gamma, and delta chains of hemoglobin. This study aimed to evaluate the usability of the Omaha System in the nursing care of individuals with beta thalassemia. The individual was given care during a 30-day stay in the hospital, and the patient's compliance with the planned care was followed by telephone communication every three days for three months after discharge. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form and the Omaha System's Problem Classification List, Intervention Chart, and Problem Evaluation Scale. A total of 43 nursing interventions were applied to the individual, mostly in the category of "education, guidance and counseling". In the fields of Sexuality and Digestion-Hydration, there was no change in the dimensions of knowledge, status and behavior of the individual. According to this case study, although the Omaha System can be used in the care of individuals with beta thalassemia, some diagnostic areas (difficulty in falling asleep, irregularity in sleeping and resting, alcohol and substance use) should be added to the nursing diagnostic fields since not including in the classification system.
