Abstract

Introduction: Childhood cancers are complex conditions that affect not only the child but also the family physically, psychosocially, and economically. During this process, parents’ caregiving and support needs increase, and children’s quality of life may be adversely affected. Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the care needs and quality of life of children aged 4 – 16 years diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers across developmental stages. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive-correlational study was carried out with 126 children receiving treatment at Ankara Bilkent City Children’s Hospital and their parents. Data were collected face-to-face using a Demographic Information Form, the KINDL Quality of Life Scale, and the Cancer Patients Needs Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, paired-samples t-test, Pearson correlation analysis, and MANOVA were used for data analysis. Statistical significance was accepted at p < 0.05. Results: Of the participants, 92.9% were receiving chemotherapy. The mean total care needs score was 82.29 ± 24.70, and the highest mean score was observed among parents of children aged 4 – 7 years (88.45 ± 23.83). In the 4 – 7 age group, children’s quality of life scores were significantly lower than parent ratings in all subscales (p < 0.001). Across all age groups, positive and statistically significant correlations were observed between children’s quality of life scores and parent proxy-reported quality of life scores. No statistically significant difference was found between age groups in terms of care needs subscales (p = 0.354). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that parents of younger children had higher care and support needs, and a significant positive correlation was found between child and parent quality of life scores across all age groups.
