Abstract

Purpose: The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of Jacobson progressive relaxation technique (PRT) on stress level and sleep quality in healthy young women with insufficient physical activity level. Methods: The study was conducted on healthy women between the ages of 18-30 with insufficient physical activity level. Women who agreed to participate in the study were randomized and divided into study (n=22) and control (n=20) groups. A total of 12 sessions of PRT were applied to the study group for 4 weeks, each for 1 hour. Exercise sessions; It was held through the Zoom application, an online meeting platform. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) were used for pre- and post-treatment evaluation. Results: The groups had a homogeneous distribution in terms of sociodemographic characteristics. When the in-group analyzes before and after Jacobson PRT were examined; In the study group, a significant decrease was observed in the PSQI and PSS scores (p=0.001, p=0.006). After the Jacobson PRT, the PSQI score showed a significant difference between the groups in favor of the study group (p=0.012). Although the PSS score decreased in the study group after Jacobson PRT, it did not show a statistically significant difference between the groups (0.977). Conclusion: Jacobson PRT was found to be effective in improving sleep quality and reducing perceived stress level in healthy women with insufficient physical activity level. It was concluded that with its indirect effect, it provides a slight increase in the level of physical activity and increases the amount of energy consumed daily.
