Abstract
The logaritm is a mathematical concept invented in Europe in the 17th century. This study examines the introduction of the concept of logarithms to the Ottoman scientific world and its development throughout the 18th century. The study provides a comparative evaluation of the first three treatise written on the subject in the Ottoman Empire and offers brief insights into other related works from the same period. The aim of the study is to examine the process by which the Ottoman Empire accepted and reproduced European knowledge in the context of logarithms. In this context, the first section of the study summarises the emergence of logarithms in Europe and their theoretical development throughout the 18th century, while the second section evaluates the treaties of Çınarî Ismail Efendi, Şekerzade Feyzullah Sermed and Gelenbevî Ismail Efendi within the framework of Ottoman scientific thought. Following the evaluation of the aforementioned works based on the copies held in the Süleymaniye Yazma Eser Kütüphanesi, the content of other sources that provide information on the subject is briefly introduced. The research used a text analysis method. The study concludes that the Ottomans initially used logarithms as a practical tool to simplify difficult calculations, and that their interest in the conceptual aspects came later. While Çınarî Ismail Efendi's treatise represents the introduction of logarithms to the Ottoman Empire, Şekerzade's treatise reflects the adaptation of the logistical method to the sexagesimal system. Gelenbevi’s treatise laid the groundwork for the first systematic theoretical treatment of logarithms by explaining the methods used in the construction of logarithmic tables.Other sources from the period that provide information on logarithms do not exceed the content of these three books. This study contributes to our understanding of the early development of logarithms in Ottoman mathematics.
