Abstract

Circular Antenna Arrays (CAAs) play a pivotal role in modern wireless communication systems due to their versatile beam-scanning capabilities. However, synthesizing these arrays to achieve suppressed Side Lobe Levels (SLL) and narrow Half Power Beam Widths (HPBW) remains a complex optimization challenge essential for minimizing electromagnetic interference. In this study, a novel bio-inspired metaheuristic approach, the Electric Eel Foraging Optimization (EEFO) algorithm, is applied to the optimum synthesis of non-uniform CAAs. Inspired by the intelligent hunting behavior of electric eels, the EEFO algorithm is utilized to determine the optimal excitation amplitudes and element positions. To evaluate the efficacy and robustness of the proposed method, three distinct array configurations consisting of 8, 10, and 12 elements are investigated. The simulation results obtained via EEFO are rigorously benchmarked against well-established algorithms, specifically Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The comparative analysis demonstrates that the EEFO algorithm significantly outperforms these conventional methods, particularly in terms of SLL suppression, proving its effectiveness as a robust tool for antenna array design.
