Abstract

Experience-centered design and interior design highlight a contemporary design approach that structures the interaction between the user and the space not only through functional requirements but also through perception, behavior, expectations, and sensory qualities. Aware that experience is shaped by the individual's needs and behaviors, designers and theorists have developed different approaches to experience design, thus creating a multi-dimensional field known as "experience-centered design." This article aims to identify the counterparts of experience-centered design approaches in the interior design process, within the framework of considering experience as a designable phenomenon. The research is conducted through five interior space examples in Turkey that are designed with experience-centered approaches and center the user: "Sezin School-Open Roof", "Sezin School-Kindergarten-Primary School", "ATOLYE Istanbul-Bomontiada", "PTT Levent Branch", "Turkcell Dialogue Museum Foyer Project". In this study, the examples are examined using a spatial analysis method in terms of "spatial cognition," "physical characteristics," and "environmental characteristics," referencing the “Spatial User Experience Model (SUE)”. The findings demonstrate that experience-centered design in interior spaces is embodied particularly through a holistic approach to spatial readability and orientation, the structuring of user flow, the support of behavior through furnishing and placement decisions, the creation of interaction and encounter areas, and environmental components such as light/acoustic/thermal comfort. Consequently, the article reveals that user experience goals can be transformed into measurable parameters at the spatial scale, and that a model-based analysis approach offers a transferable framework for generating evaluation and design feedback in interior design.
