Abstract
This study focuses on a typological and analogical analysis of 28 metal mirrors in the Samsun Museum. These mirrors, generally thought to be tomb finds, and most of whose exact findspots are unknown, serve as evidence of cultural and commercial interaction in antiquity. The analysis categorizes the mirrors into two main groups: unhandled and handled. Unhandled mirrors come in disc and rectangular shapes, with discs consisting of decorated, undecorated, and perforated rims. Handled mirrors are further categorized as having vertical handles and horizontal handles. Analogous findings indicate that undecorated disc-shaped mirrors were common during the Hellenistic and Roman Imperial Periods, while decorated examples, featuring concentric rings made using lathe-drawing techniques, became widespread during the Roman Period. Mirrors with perforated edges have also been dated to the 1st-3rd centuries AD. Rectangular mirrors, on the other hand, are concentrated between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD, while vertical-handled mirrors date from the Classical to the Roman Imperial Period, and horizontal-handled silver mirrors date to the Late Roman-Early Byzantine Period. These mirrors are not only objects of daily use but also archaeological data that provides valuable information about the production techniques, commercial networks, and cultural continuity of their respective periods.
