Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the gender role stress and stigmatizing attitudes, actions and beliefs toward abortion of female nursing students. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with 230 female nursing students. Individual Information Form, Feminine Gender Role Stress Scale, and Stigmatizing Attitudes, Beliefs and Actions Scale towards Abortion were used to collect data. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskall Wallis-H test, and Spearman correlation. Results: The mean score of the students on the gender role stress scale was 81.98±21.07, and the mean score of the stigmatizing attitudes, beliefs, and actions towards abortion scale was 29.89±10.88. A low-level, negative correlation was found between mean scores of gender role stress and the stigmatizing attitudes, beliefs, and actions towards abortion scale total and sub-dimension. Gender role stress and stigmatizing attitudes, actions, and beliefs towards abortion differ according to students' grade level, whether they have taken a course on obstetrics/women's health and diseases, and whether they have taken a course/information on gender and sexual health. In addition, stigmatizing attitudes and beliefs about abortion were found to be higher among students who lived in towns/villages with their families and lower among students who received courses/information on family planning (p<0.05). Conclusion: The research results showed that gender role stress was high and stigmatizing attitudes, actions, and beliefs towards abortion were low among female nursing students.
