Abstract

Purpose: The study aimed to determine the relationship between social media addiction and the desire to be liked among university students who use social media. Methods: The sample group of this descriptive and relationship-seeking research consisted of 351 university students. During the data collection process, data collection tools were arranged according to the online survey design and Sociodemographic Information Form, Social Media Addiction Scale (SMAS) and Desire to Be Liked Scale (DLS) were used. Data was collected between July 30, 2023 and September 30, 2023. Data were evaluated statistically by Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman correlation analysis. Results: 86.9% of participants are female, 95.2% are single, 52.4% perceive their income as sufficient to cover their expenses, 84.6% are undergraduate students, and 87.7% live with their families. The SMAS total mean score of university students who perceive their income as less than their expenses is; It was found to be significantly higher than university students who perceived their income as equal to or greater than their expenses (p:0.027). It was determined that the SMAS total mean score of university students living with their friends in the student dormitory was significantly higher than that of university students living alone, with family or roommates (p:0.010). A moderate positive relationship was found between the SMAS total mean score and DBS score mean of university students (r= 0.430, p<0.01). Conclusion: This study found that university students' levels of social media addiction and desire for approval were below average. However, it was observed that as social media addiction increased, so did the desire for approval. It was determined that students who believed their income was lower than their expenses had significantly higher levels of social media addiction; this finding suggests that economic conditions may be an influential variable on social media addiction. Given that social media addiction is one of the significant problems of the digital age, it is believed that studies conducted with different sample groups will contribute to the literature in order to maintain the relevance of the subject.
