Abstract

Social media networks have become part of lifestyle in many aspects of life. Aside from the increasing use of social media, which changes the way of communication, users spread their personal data quickly and carelessly in various media. But is this data reliably protected? This is an important question that every user should ask themselves. In this study, which aims to evaluate how well social media users protect their personal data in different channels; After providing brief information about social media channels and their use, critical threats were identified by analyzing the survey results answered by 419 social media users who had different demographic and sociocultural characteristics and shared various personal data, using the closed-ended survey technique. While these threats become more deeply rooted with the increasing role of social media in human life, the problem of protecting personal information is constantly growing. According to the results of the research, it was concluded that users feel that sensitive information such as data privacy and identity and bank information should be kept away from social media and that it is important to raise awareness on this issue in various channels.
