Abstract

In plants, the RNA interference (RNAi) system responds to a number of triggers including transgenes, viral infection, transposons, and repeated elements. All of these triggers lead to silencing outcomes ranging from transactional repression to mRNA degradation to chromatin remodeling. Hence, plants provide us with a unique opportunity to understand the full array of RNAi effector mechanisms. In the present review, the recent developments in understanding of plant RNAi mechanisms are discussed from a biochemical perspective and the potential benefits of RNAi are evaluated.
