Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of intravitreal ranibizumab on central macular thickness and visual outcome in the treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME). Material and Method: Thirty four eyes of 19 patients with diabetic macular edema who were admitted between June 2012 and June 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination and blood tests including HbA1c level findings and were recorded. In order to determine the efficacy of intravitreal ranibizumab therapy, before and after injection, best corrected visual acuity was evaluated and central macular thickness was measured with spectral optical coherence tomography. Results were statistically analyzed. Results: The mean logMar visual acuity was 0.42±0.96 before intravitreal ranibizumab, 0.79±0.41 at the first month of injection and 0.75± 0.59 at the third month respectively. Changes in visual acuity was statistically significant (p<0.001). The mean central macular thickness was 484.05±130.43 ? before intravitreal ranibizumab, 410.26±124.64? at the first month and 360.32±122.37? at the third month respectively. The mean central macular thickness decreased compared to the pre-operative period and reduction was statistically significant (p<0.001). Long-term metabolic control that can be monitored with HbA1c levels had statistically significant positive impact on the treatment results. (t -test, p<0.05) Conclusion: We observed increase in best corrected visual acuity, decrease in central macular thickness with intravitreal bevacizumab treatment for diabetic macular edema. Intravitreal ranibizumab provide a visual, functional and anatomic benefit in eyes with diabetic macular edema in early period. HbA1c level, is good indicator of long-term metabolic control, and had a positive impact on the treatment.
