Abstract

Today, devleopment processes are evaluated not only by production and income increases like economic growth, but also by multidimensional criteria such as individuals’ quality of life, welfare level and environmental sustainability. When evaluating the economic performance of countries, it has become important to take into account environmental indicators as well as economic and social indicators. Comparative analysis of these multifaceted elements across countries is of great importance for policymakers to develop appropriate policies. In this context, the main purpose of this study is to contribute to the relevant literature by comparatively examining the economic growth, human development and welfare levels along with environmental sustainability in MINT countries (Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey). For this reason, economic growth rates, misery index, human development index, Legatum Prosperity Index, ecological footprint and CO2 emissions per capita were selected as the variables of the study. According to the results, Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey show different performances in terms of economic growth, misery index, human development, welfare and environmental sustainability. Although Mexico did not rank first in any variable, it performed relatively well in terms of the human development index, the Legatum Prosperity Index and the misery index. While Indonesia performs best in the Legatum Prosperity Index and the misery index, it appears to have difficulties in environmental sustainability. While Nigeria underperformed in economic growth, human development index and Legatum Prosperity Index, it performed well in terms of ecological footprint and CO2 emissions per capita. Despite Turkey has high levels of economic growth and human development, it underperformed in terms of misery index and environmental sustainability. It has been observed that economic growth and development in these countries generally occur by ignoring the environment.
