Abstract

Among escalating global environmental challenges, waste has become a critical issue in terms of environmental sustainability and public health. Accordingly, educational curricula address key waste management concepts such as recycling, reuse, and upcycling to promote environmental awareness and responsibility among students. Although these concepts differ in purpose and process, research indicates that they are frequently confused or used interchangeably. Given that students often consult internet sources for examples of waste-related practices, the accuracy of online visual representations becomes an important concern. This study therefore aims to examine the conceptual appropriateness of images related to recycling, reuse, and upcycling presented in Google Images. This research was designed as a document analysis study. The data were obtained by using the keywords “recycling examples,” “reuse examples,” and “upcycling examples” in the “Images” tab of the Google search engine. Screenshots of the retrieved images were taken and examined using the descriptive analysis method. The analysis process was conducted independently by two researchers, and any disagreements were resolved through consensus. The findings indicated significant conceptual inconsistencies in the visual representations. It was determined that most of the examples listed under the heading “Recycling” actually fell within the scope of reuse or upcycling, while very few appropriate examples were found under the heading “Reuse.” In contrast, the visuals categorized as “Upcycling” were largely conceptually appropriate. As a result, it was concluded that online images may lead to conceptual misunderstandings and that it is important to teach these concepts accurately.
