Abstract

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the ElectronicHealth Literacy Scale in self-management of chronic diseases. Material and Methods: This methodological study involved 300 individuals. Data were collected from patients (133 males, 167 females) selected through convenience sampling at a Training and Research Hospital, using descriptive questions and a 19-item draft of the 'Electronic Health Literacy Scale in Self-Management of Chronic Diseases'. The data were evaluated using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, content validity index, item correlation, Cronbach’s alpha, McDonald’s Omega coefficient, and test-retest reliability. Results: The mean age of individuals with chronic disease was 52.0±14.59 years (range: 19-90 years). The item-total correlations of the scale, which contained a total of 9 items within a two-factor structure, ranged from 0.384 to 0.861 (p<0.001). The scale’s confirmatory factor analysis indicated a good and acceptable fit (RMSEA=0.10 χ2=207.27, df=15, p<0.001, GFI=0.95, CFI=0.98, NFI=0.98, TLI=0.98). The scale’s overall score demonstrated strong internal consistency, with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.818 and an McDonald’s Omega coefficient of 0.810. Test-retest reliability was 0.94. Conclusion: The scale demonstrates good reliability and validity, consisting of 9 items with a 2-factor structure and is applicable to individuals with chronic diseases between the ages of 19 and 90. Healthcare professionals can use the ‘Electronic Health Literacy Scale’ as an effective and reliable tool in assessing electronic health literacy skills in the self-management of individuals with chronic diseases.
