Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to examineadults' disaster preparedness beliefs and perceived stress levels and associated factors. Material and Methods: The sample of the study, which was conducted with a descriptive and correlational design, consisted of 490 adults enrolled in three family life centers affiliated with municipalities in Ankara. Data were obtained using personal information form, General Disaster Preparedness Belief Scale and Perceived Stress Scale. In the analysis of the data, frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, independent-samples t test, and one-way analysis of variance were used. Results: Of the participants, 64.9% were 40 years of age or older, 68.2% were female, 50.6% were single, 44.3% were high school graduates, 58.6% perceived their health as good, and 69.6% had not experienced a disaster before. The mean score of the Disaster Preparedness Belief Scale was 109.85 ± 13.29 (Min: 69, Max: 152) and the mean score of the Perceived Stress Scale was 27.81 ± 6.68 (Min: 10, Max: 51). There was a significant negative relationship between disaster preparedness belief and perceived stress (r=-0.182, p<0.001). The mean score on the Disaster Preparedness Belief Scale was higher in adults who had university and higher education levels and those who perceived their health as good. The mean score of the Perceived Stress Scale was higher in adults who were 40 years of age or older, single, unemployed, and perceived their health as poor. Conclusion: The study concluded that adults’ disaster preparedness beliefs were not sufficiently high and perceived stress levels were moderate. Education level and health perception were significant factors for both disaster preparedness beliefs and perceived stress. Awareness activities and education programs should be increased to improve the disaster preparedness levels of the community. Since higher stress level negatively affect disaster preparedness belief, nurses should provide adults with effective stress coping skills.
