Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between COPD symptom severity and urinary incontinence (UI) symptom severity and to investigate the level of UI knowledge in individuals diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Material and Methods: One hundred individuals with COPD (34 women, 66 men, age: 61.86±7.58 years, body mass index: 28.34±6.04 kg/m2) were included. Individuals were classified according to the GOLD Classification (A, B, E). The Modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale (MMRC), COPD Assessment Test (CAT) and Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ) were used to determine symptom severity of COPD and to examine its effect on quality of life. The presence and severity of UI with the International Consultation Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF), and the level of UI knowledge with the Prolapse and Incontinence Knowledge Questionnaire-UI (PIKQ-UI) were evaluated. Results: The presence of UI was found to be 45% in individuals with COPD. There was a correlation between ICIQ-SF and MMRC (rho=0.260; p=0.009), CAT (rho=0.260; p=0.009) and LCQ (rho=-0.443; p<0.001). The median PIKQ-UI score was 4 and the level of UI knowledge was found to be inadequate and below the 80% threshold. Conclusion: It was found that the presence and severity of UI in individuals with COPD were associated with the severity of dyspnea symptoms, general health status affected by COPD, cough symptoms and health-related quality of life. Incontinence knowledge was found to be low in individuals with COPD. It may be important to consider the presence of UI in the assessment, education and treatment of individuals with COPD.

Özet

Amaç: Bu çalışmadaki amaç Kronik Obstrüktif Akciğer Hastalığı (KOAH) tanılı bireylerde KOAH semptom şiddeti ile üriner inkontinans (Üİ) semptom şiddeti arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesi ve Üİ bilgi düzeyininin araştırılmasıydı. Gereç ve Yöntem: KOAH tanısı almış 100 birey (34 kadın, 66 erkek, yaş: 61,86±7,58 yıl, beden kütle indeksi: 28,34±6,04 kg/m2) dâhil edildi. Bireyler GOLD Sınıflamasına (A, B, E) göre sınıflandırıldı.
