Abstract
Objective: Plants belonging to the Urtica L. genus (U. dioica, U. pilulifera, U. urens) have been determined to be used as traditional folk drugs in ethnobotanical studies conducted in the Southeastern Anatolia Region (Türkiye). This study aims to make a general evaluation of the plants in terms of pharmaceutical properties (medical purposeful use, part used, method of application, extraction method, drug intake route). Material and Methods: In ethnobotanical studies conducted in the Southeastern Anatolia Region, the use of plants belonging to the genus Urtica L. as traditional folk drugs was determined and evaluated through content analysis. In data analysis, MANOVA and Games-Howell tests were performed using the SPSS 27 package program, and average effect sizes were determined according to statistical methods. According to the medicinal purpose, the use of the plants was statistically analyzed. Results: It has been determined that all three plants are widely used in the Southeastern Anatolia Region as traditional folk medicine for antidiabetic, antirheumatic, antiatherosclerotic, and chemotherapeutic purposes. It has been determined that U. dioica, U. urens, and U. pilulifera (44, 26, 8, respectively) are used for medicinal purposes in general disease types. U. dioica is the plant most commonly used as a traditional medicine among the public. Anew, U dioica was determined to be the most studied taxon in in vitro and in vivo experimental studies in the same direction. Conclusion: It may be recommended to focus on clinical studies on U. dioica in cancer, diabetes, and ulcer diseases. It may be recommended to focus on in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies on U. pilulifera, and U. urens plants, which have been relatively less studied, especially in terms of experimental studies, and have a rich biochemical structure.
