Abstract

Objective: It is important to meet the care needs of the individual with the disease and to support the spouse in caring for the patient. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between care dependency and spouse support levels in individuals with chronic diseases. Material and Methods: The study is descriptive and correlational. The sample was determined by power analysis (n:134). Data were collected between September 2022 and January 2023 at the medical faculty hospital using the participant information form, Care Dependency Scale and Spousal Support Scale. Number, percentage, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis, Spearman Correlation Analysis and Tamhane's test statistics were used to analyze the data. Results: The mean age of the individuals was 56.57±9.389, the mean age of the spouse was 57.02±9.211, the mean duration of marriage was 37.51±13.610, the mean number of children was 3.08±1.566, the mean care dependency score was 73.32±16.834, and the mean spouse support score was 69.25±9.666. It was determined that care dependency was low and spousal support was adequate. A negative relationship was found between the emotional dimension of spousal support and care dependency (r=-0.182, p=0.036). Conclusion: Care dependency is low and spousal support is adequate in individuals with chronic diseases. Increasing age of the spouse and number of children negatively affect both care dependency and spousal support. There is no direct relationship between the total scores of care dependency and spousal support in individuals with chronic diseases, but there is a relationship in the emotional dimension. It may be appropriate for nurses to evaluate individuals with chronic diseases in terms of care dependency, to include the patient's spouse in care, and to inform the spouse about this issue.
