Abstract

This study aims to provide an example for integrating workshops and exhibitions at science centers into teaching chemistry concepts by underlining learners’ engagement in science education. In this regard, a learning activity was designed to be practiced through a technology workshop and the Blue Planet exhibition of the Üsküdar Science Center. The activity focuses on enhancing students’ understanding of acidity and basicity based on pH values and environmental awareness about acid rain. Besides fostering understanding about acid and base concepts, the activity seeks to eliminate misconceptions about acid strength and acid-base reactions. The activity was structured around the 5E methodology. The technology workshop is utilized at the “explore” step for testing pH by developing a pH sensor, while the Blue Planet exhibition area, as a context for the “elaborate” step, is for discussion of the formation and effects of acid rain. With the amalgamation of the 5E methodology with the before, during, and after visit sections and detailed examinations of attainment of objectives and elimination of misconceptions, the activity offers an opportunity for teachers who are willing to provide a learning experience for their students to understand acid-base concepts both hands-on and minds-on.
